Civil Engineering

Genesis

The Department of Civil Engineering, started in the year 2009, offers BE (Civil Engineering), ME (Construction Engineering & Management) & ME (Structural Engineering). The department activities are planned with dual inputs from Industry and reputed academic bodies in the state. Also, the department strengthens its core activities periodically with inputs from industry, civil engineers and contractors, some of whom are trustees of the Institution. In addition to regular academic activities, the department strives to transform students into a pragmatic Civil Engineer by involving them in solving field problems with needed guidance from faculty members.

Vision

To be a human and technical resource centre to meet the needs of the construction industry.

Mission

M1: Impart students the knowledge of principles and practices of Civil Engineering and shape them to meet the expectations of the industry.

M2: Encourage practical learning through collaboration with industry.

M3: Nurture social responsibility and leadership skills by inculcating ethical and moral values.

Program Objectives
  • Graduates will achieve recognition in Civil Engineering profession as practicing Engineers and consultants. Provide technical services to leading organizations in diverse areas promoting professional and moral ethics.
  • Graduates recognized for their professional and technical competence to provide sustainable solutions to societal problems.
  • Graduates are nurtured to engage in continued learning through professional development and cognizant of emerging issues.

PO1     Engineering knowledge Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

PO2     Problem analysis Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems   reaching   substantiated   conclusions   using   first   principles   of Mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

PO3     Design/development Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

PO4     Conduct investigations   of complex   problems Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

PO5     Modern tool usage Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and   modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

PO6     The engineer and society Apply  reasoning  informed  by  the  contextual  knowledge to  assess societal,  health,  safety,  legal  and  cultural  issues and  the  consequent responsibilities relevant  to the professional engineering practice.

PO7     Environment and sustainability Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.

PO8     Ethics Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

PO9     Individual and team work Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.

PO10   Communication Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.

PO11   Project management and finance Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

PO12   Lifelong Learning Recognize  the  need  for,  and  have  the  preparation  and  ability to  engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

  • Graduates should be able to understand design drawings and execute construction with appropriate material, equipment, and labor ensuring quality, safety, and economy.
  • Graduates should be able to plan and design simple residential, commercial, and industrial structures as per building laws and codes and prepare execution drawings with appropriate specifications, estimates, and execution schedules.

KGI's Quality Testing Lab

KGI’s Quality Testing Lab (QTL) was established in the year 2023 by Erode Builder Educational Trust with an area of 6500 Sq. ft., an initiative by the Department of Civil Engineering, Builders Engineering College.

KGI’s QTL is equipped with state-of-art technology equipment for testing construction materials to fulfil the industrial requirements as per Indian Standards.

  • Building Materials
  • Highway Materials
  • Soil and Rocks
  • Soil & Wire ropes
  • Non-Destructive Test (NDT)

Laboratories

The department is well equipped with spacious laboratories under various categories such as Strength of Materials, Surveying, Environmental Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Concrete & Highway Engineering, Structural Engineering and Computer Aided Design & Drafting. Apart from meeting the academic requirements, the labs are equipped to consultancy and research needs.
